hello-smlChristine Lovatt

There are many reasons why we enjoy competitions – the glory of being a winner, the recognition for our efforts, the motivation to achieve at a higher level of performance and the skills gained while competing.

According to the Oxford dictionary, competition means ‘the activity or condition of striving to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others.’ It comes from Latin competitio(n-) ‘rivalry’, from competere ‘strive for’ (com ‘together’ + petere ‘aim at, seek’).

Recently, we discovered how much you love your Lovatts competitions. We received many letters from you about the changes we made to our BIG Crossword magazine and although some of you liked the new format, some of you didn’t.

We now know that the number of contests in our magazine is important to many of you, so you will notice that in the September issue we have added a few more contests and prizes for your enjoyment.

Sadly, the outcome of a competition can result in a win-lose or even a lose-lose situation. However I like to think our crossword competitions provide a win-win outcome for all you puzzlers. Yours may not be the first correct entry drawn, but the enjoyment of solving the clues, the improvement to your mental health and the satisfaction gained in completing the crossword are all part of the reward.

Thanks to all who wrote in and gave us feedback on the changes, we have taken note of your preferences and will try to come close to the impossible – that is, pleasing everybody.

I hope you enjoy the competitions in this month’s BIG Crossword.

Good luck and happy puzzling!
