Good Morning
I have just received my Christine’s BIG crossword book for May 2009 and whilst doing the Diamond crossword I found the clue (violet antiseptic). Your answer was “iodine”. Well iodine is Yellow/Brown. The violet antiseptic is (or was when I was a child, a long time ago) Condy’s Crystal. It has a violet colour.
Would love to hear where you got your answer.
June McDonald
You’re right June, iodine comes in yellow, and also in scarlet, green and violet. It gets its name from the Greek iodes meaning ‘violet’. Condy’s Crystal, also known as Permanganate of Potash, is also violet and is used as a disinfectant, so either would be a correct answer to the clue, but only iodine will fit the space.
Thanks for your feedback, always welcome and interesting.
Happy puzzling!
Christine
