There are many other variations. In Ireland, Cork residents are Corkonians and Galway folk are Galwegians.
In Scotland, there are Glaswegians from Glasgow, Dundonians from Dundee and Aberdonians from Aberdeen. Islanders from Orkney are Orcadians. In Wales there are Cardiffians from Cardiff and over the border in England there are Mancunians from Manchester, Liverpudlians (or Scousers) from Liverpool, Lancastrians from Lancaster, and Haligonians from Halifax. Oxonians live in Oxford, and a resident of Newcastle uses the Latin term Novocastrian.
Residents of Newcastle in Australia also call themselves Novocastrians or Newies, while Sydney citizens are called Sydneysiders and the folks from Brisbane are Brisbanites or Brisbanians. Adelaidians live in Adelaide and Melbourne is home to Melburnians.
The region of New Zealand in which Christchurch sits is in the Canterbury Province, hence the term Cantabrian for a Christchurch citizen. Auckland is full of Aucklanders, with Wellingtonians further south in Wellington.
In Italy, Florentines, Parmesans, Neapolitans and Venetians might sound like biscuits, cheese, ice cream and window blinds but they’re all Italians from Florence, Parma, Naples and Venice. Then there are Alsatians and Swedes (I didn’t even mention Hamburgers or Frankfurters). A native of Nauru is a Nauruan, the only demonym that is a palindrome.
In Monaco, naturalised citizens are called Monacans, whereas those born in Monaco are Monagasque. Moscow residents are Muscovites and if you’re from the Belgian region of Wallonia, you’re a Walloon. People in the Philippines are Filipinos. Have I missed your demonym? Drop me a line and let me know.
